Are you paying to get paid? Unfortunately, navigating the job market in South Africa comes with its own set of challenges, including the risk of encountering recruitment scams. To safeguard yourself from fraudulent practices, it’s essential to know how to avoid recruitment scams in South Africa.

Entering the job market can be daunting with numerous opportunities advertised on various online platforms. The process of finding suitable positions, preparing for interviews, and ultimately securing a job can be stressful.

First Step To Avoid Recruitment Scams: Know Who To Trust

As a job seeker, you need to be aware of additional obstacles, particularly unethical and fraudulent recruitment firms. In South Africa, there are over 2,000 recruitment companies, but only about 800 are listed with APSO (The Federation of African Professional Staffing Organisations), which is committed to professionalising the staffing industry in Southern Africa. APSO sets clear ethical guidelines for recruitment firms to protect candidates’ and clients’ interests.

Many candidates are unaware of the recruitment processes companies follow, making it easy for fake recruitment companies to exploit inexperienced and vulnerable job seekers. One common scam involves fraudulent recruitment companies charging upfront fees to list candidates in their database.

Another scam involves giving candidates false hope of employment to the point of extortion. The job applicant receives an encouraging email from the recruitment agency stating they have been selected for a job. However, before employment can commence, verification checks are required, which the candidate must pay for.

Fortunately, the Department of Labour has noticed the issue of employment agencies taking advantage of job seekers by illegally charging exorbitant fees.

The code of ethical and professional practice states that members may not directly or indirectly charge any fees to candidates.

Identifying A Recruitment Scam

Remember: At no stage should a candidate ever pay a recruitment agency for employment. There may be fees for additional services, such as professional CV design or interview training, but never to register on a database. The hiring company that seeks talent pays the staffing company for their services in finding suitable candidates according to their recruitment requirements.

To avoid being scammed, ensure you work with reputable recruitment agencies like Swift International Human Resources.

Stay informed, stay cautious, and best of luck in your job search!
